CORRESPONDENT Heather Couper says she spotted a beast in East Claydon
Hi

Admittedly - I'd supped some lovely wine at the Five Arrows at Waddesdon for lunch, but at 3pm on June 2nd 1996, we definitely spotted a 'beast'.

We were driving through East Claydon, and saw what we first thought was
a black labrador standing in the road - but it was cat-shaped.

From a distance of 50 metres, we reckon that it was 60cm tall, and 75cm
long.

We tried to get closer, but the beast completely ignored us and
disappeared into a garden. We're convinced that it was a puma.

Our theory is that these cats are the descendants of animals which
escaped from the Rothschild mansions - after all, we have Waddesdon,
Mentmore, Halton and Tring on the doorstep. And - apparently - male
pumas can range over long distances.

I lived in Steeple Claydon for 12 years and late one night, around 10 years ago, while travelling home between Quainton and Botolph claydon, also saw an animal identical to the one described by your correspondant, Ms Couper. I have a tendancy to be extremely sceptical about all things unproven, but I have to say, this creature was caught squarely in my headlights for 2 or 3 seconds, before disappearing into a field gateway, and I have no doubt that it was a member of the 'big cat' family. This was only a few miles from Heathers sighting.
